Biography:

Helen Owens Obituary

Helen Virginia (Carter) Owens, age 93, of Huntsville, MO., passed away peacefully in her home, into the loving arms of Jesus, Wednesday, November 14, 2018, with family by her side.  She was born February 27, 1925 in rural Monroe City, MO, the third of three girls, to Fred H. Carter and Vinnie (Lindsay) Carter.

Helen graduated from Monroe City High School in 1943 and was employed the following September by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where she worked for 10 years, becoming Chief Operator and where she met her future husband, Oda ‘Bud’ Owens.  They were married May 21, 1950 and moved to Moberly, Mo in September 1952. They made the home of their dreams in Huntsville, MO in 1955. Bud preceded her in death on December 16, 2015 after 65 years of marriage.

Helen loved being a wife, homemaker and mother. Her hobbies included gardening, flowers, sewing, refinishing furniture, helping Bud to “get the cows in the first time!” and the best angel food cakes this side of Heaven. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Huntsville, serving in a variety of positions for years. Helen was involved in her community as treasurer of Huntsville Horse Show, leader of Cub Scouts, participated in 4-H, Huntsville Historical Society and MRS Woman of the Year in 1993. But most of all she was the happy note in her family, compassionate and encouraging life partner to her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, the silent, behind-the-scenes hard worker who always knew just what to say. She cherished her friends, whether long time or brand new, and made a conscious effort to stay in touch.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet Owens-Rolfes of Huntsville, MO; one son, David (Mary) Owens of Jefferson City, MO; five grandchildren, Jason (Misa) Rolfes, Brady Rolfes, Melissa Rolfes (Will) Pfeiffer, Lauren Owens (John) Hirner and Mike Owens; five great-grandchildren, Jessica Owens, Lina and Noah Rolfes, Robbie and Danny Pfeiffer, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to both of her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret (Carter) Parker, Betty Ruth (Carter) Hupp and one nephew.
